Question of the day?

How do you feel about children calling adults by their first name?
Do you feel that it is OK or not?
Tell me why.

Personally Sarah I think it is disrespectful and leads to bigger troubles down the road like talking back and even using improper language to parents or other adults.

I prefer to be called by my first name. I don't like to be called Mrs. ____ - that's my Mother-in-law's name and I don't want to be reminded :)

I think it depends on the relationship...my kids call my friends by their first names, but people at church and school they address more formally.

I prefer to be called by my last name by a child. When I was a kid I would have never dreamed of calling one of my parent's friends or associates by their first name!

Definitely by my last name until they are teenagers and then I am fine if they call me by name.

It depends on the situation. The high school students call all the teachers by their first names, including the principal. At the elementary school and church children call me by my last name. My nephews, niece, and their friends call me by my first name. My friends children also call me by my first name. It's all kind of confusing now that it's all written out there. Perhaps after teaching longer, I'll get used to being called by my last name! Then again, perhaps it'll stay confusing...

It depends on the individual situation. When I was growing up, we had a young mother, who insisted that she was too young to be called by her last name. Some of the parents were upset at first, until they realized that she still commanded respect from the children in other ways. Elaine's Girl Scout leaders had the girls call them 'Miss' and their first names. That made a distinction between adult and children, the best of both schools of thought. For me, each situation is unique and dictates individual decisions.
